The assessment is clear for Lewis Hamilton: the Miami Grand Prix was a failure on several levels. Never really in the rhythm of the leaders, the Briton chained underperformances, whether in short formats or in qualifying.

The race only made the situation worse. From the first lap, a clash with Franco Colapinto heavily damaged his car, ruining any chance of climbing up the ranks.

“I’m going to take a different approach for the next race, he announces bluntly. The way we are currently preparing doesn’t help us.”

A race endured in anonymity

Despite the damage, Hamilton still managed to finish the race, ending in a mid-field zone without any real chance to progress. A frustrating situation for a driver used to playing leading roles.

“Without the damage, I think we would have been in the fight, he estimates. The car was good during the formation laps.”

This feeling of missed opportunity is reinforced by the efforts made internally: “It’s a shame, because it doesn’t really reflect the work done by the team” he adds.

An assumed change of approach

Faced with this assessment, Hamilton does not want to wait. The seven-time world champion plans to adjust his working method from the next event, with the goal of quickly regaining performance.

This change could concern the preparation ahead of the weekends, a point he now considers insufficient. The idea is clear: to break out of a dynamic that does not produce the expected results.

At Ferrari, this repositioning is crucial in a season start where every detail counts to stay in touch with the best teams.

The next step in the 2026 F1 calendar will take Formula 1 to Canada, a circuit historically favorable to Hamilton. But despite his past successes, the Briton remains cautious about his chances.

“We are going to a circuit with long straights, and we lose between three and four tenths just in top speed, he explains. This problem will be there until we fix it.”

An expected reaction

Hamilton is not looking for excuses: Miami is to be forgotten. But this frustration could well serve as a trigger for the rest of the season.

“It’s a weekend to forget. We will move forward and try to improve from the next race” he concludes.

It remains to be seen if this change of approach will bear fruit. In such a tight season, the slightest evolution can shift the hierarchy… and Ferrari clearly needs it.
