Speculation surrounding the future of Max Verstappen continues to stir Formula 1, to the point of eliciting reactions from major figures in the sport. For Damon Hill, a departure of the Dutchman could cause a real structural shock for the discipline.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen recently hinted that he might leave F1 at the end of the 2026 season, a hypothesis directly linked to his rejection of the new technical regulations and the energy management of the single-seaters. This situation fuels growing concern in the paddock.
In this context, Damon Hill believes that the discipline would face major consequences if Verstappen were to carry out this threat. According to him, the departure of such a dominant figure could weaken not only the spectacle, but also the economic balance of the championship.
Technical regulations at the heart of the discomfort
The central point of Verstappen’s dissatisfaction remains the new engine architecture, with a 50/50 split between electric energy and internal combustion engine. This evolution imposes more complex management, forcing drivers to lift off the throttle in certain phases and constantly adapt their driving.
These constraints, combined with a feeling of less “pure” racing, fuel visible frustration in the Dutchman. Even if the FIA has planned adjustments from the Miami Grand Prix, there is no guarantee that this will be enough to completely reverse his feelings.
For Hill, the situation goes beyond the individual case and affects the overall attractiveness of the discipline.

“If he said: ‘I’ve had enough, I’m stopping, I’m going to do something else,’ that’s exactly the big fear Bernie Ecclestone had. He had somehow locked down all other categories to avoid competition, but today that’s no longer the case. There’s Le Mans, IndyCar, other options. He could leave and come back later, and that would create huge problems for F1 marketing,” explains Hill.
A direct impact on F1’s image and value
Beyond the sport, Hill also emphasizes the potential impact of such a scenario on the economy of Formula 1. The departure of a driver considered the absolute benchmark on the grid could affect the perception of the championship among fans… but also investors.
“If the biggest star decides to turn his back on F1, that would not be well received, including financially,” he adds.
The next technical developments expected in Miami could play a key role in Verstappen’s thinking. But at this stage, uncertainty still dominates, and F1 holds its breath in the face of a scenario that could reshuffle the championship cards… well beyond the track.
