The start of the 2026 F1 season confirmed Mercedes’ dominance, with a series of victories placing the team in a strong position. But this sporting success comes with a delicate challenge: managing the rivalry between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
The young Italian currently leads the championship by nine points over his teammate. A situation that promises an intense battle for the title… but also potential internal tensions.
The still burning memory of Hamilton-Rosberg
At Mercedes, this type of duel is not new. The team has already experienced an uncontrollable rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg between 2014 and 2016.
The defining episode remains their clash at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, a symbol of tension at its peak. A precedent that Toto Wolff has not forgotten and which clearly influences his current management.
Faced with this situation, Toto Wolff made sure to set a precise framework. While he accepts competition between his drivers, he insists on limits not to be crossed.
“The peculiarity in Formula 1 is that teammates are also the biggest rivals. We have learned a lot over the last ten years on how to manage these situations. But managing well also means letting them race, while respecting certain values,” he explains.
“150,000 people behind you”
The Austrian boss goes further by recalling the extent of the responsibility weighing on his drivers. For him, representing Mercedes goes far beyond the individual.

“The team is always bigger than the drivers. This is Mercedes, one of the most powerful brands in the world. We have 150,000 people working for us, a company that has existed for over 120 years,” Wolff emphasizes.
“Having the opportunity to race for Mercedes implies responsibility. As soon as a driver thinks everything revolves around them, that’s not a mindset we will accept,” he states.
Aware of potential excesses, Wolff does not hesitate to mention radical measures if necessary, even if he hopes never to reach that point.
“I would prefer to have only one car on track rather than see the situation degenerate, but I don’t think we will get there, because our drivers have been part of the Mercedes family for a long time and share this philosophy,” he concludes.
A fragile balance to preserve
As the season enters a decisive phase, Mercedes will have to find the right balance between internal competition and collective discipline. A complex equation, where every mistake could be very costly.
One thing is certain: the duel between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will be closely watched… as much for the spectacle as for its consequences.
