Charles Leclerc didn’t beat around the bush. While Ferrari remains Mercedes’ main rival at the start of the 2026 season, a key element is still holding back the Scuderia’s ambitions: its engine. And the Monegasque driver admits it without filter.

Since the opening of the championship, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari have established themselves as the most credible challengers behind Mercedes. Despite promising starts in Australia and China, the Scuderia has never managed to capitalize against the impressive consistency of the Silver Arrows.
With three third-place finishes in as many Grands Prix, Ferrari shows interesting consistency, but is already significantly behind in the championship. The rise of McLaren further complicates the equation, making the fight for the top even more intense in this new technical era.
Leclerc puts his finger on the problem
“We are still very early in the season, so yes, I think it’s possible to come back. But it’s a huge challenge. Mercedes won’t let up and will continue to push very hard,” analyzes Leclerc.
“There are many areas to improve, but engine optimization is probably the biggest difference between them and us. With optimization alone, we can make a big difference. And of course, it’s not just that: there’s also raw power, and that’s where we are currently at a deficit compared to them.”
In a 2026 regulation where energy management and the balance between thermal and electric are crucial, this engine deficit weighs heavily. Ferrari seems to have a solid chassis base, but without a significant gain on the power unit side, closing the gap with Mercedes promises to be complex.

The chassis, Ferrari’s real strong point
“We are starting to have a fairly clear vision of the car’s characteristics that we need to improve to progress. But I think, from a chassis perspective, it’s a pretty solid car. It’s probably our strong point so far,” continues the Monegasque driver.
This analysis highlights a paradoxical situation: Ferrari has a well-designed car in terms of aerodynamics and mechanics, but remains hampered by a less powerful engine. In an ultra-competitive Formula 1, this imbalance is enough to make the difference against a machine as complete as Mercedes.
Hope thanks to developments… but under pressure
The arrival of the ADUO mechanism (additional development opportunities) after Miami could offer a breath of fresh air to Ferrari. If the engine deficit is confirmed in the calculations, the Scuderia could benefit from additional updates to try and close the gap.
But time is running out. Mercedes continues to set a relentless pace at the top of the championship, and every race without a win further complicates title hopes. For Leclerc and Ferrari, the mission is clear: transform their good base into a complete package… before it’s too late.
