The phenomenon Kimi Antonelli continues to make an impression in Formula 1. At only 19 years old, the Mercedes driver is racking up high-level performances, with notably two consecutive pole positions in Shanghai and Suzuka.
These results allow him to become the youngest F1 championship leader in history, with a nine-point lead over his teammate George Russell.
A meteoric rise that impresses the entire paddock, even if some observers call for the feat to be put into perspective.
An untouchable Mercedes
Former driver Mika Salo recognizes Antonelli’s talent, while highlighting Mercedes’ current superiority.
“Suzuka was another solid performance from him” he explains, before adding: “Mercedes is absolutely dominant right now, so if Russell doesn’t win, it’s Antonelli who wins.”
According to him, this clear hierarchy primarily reflects the strength of the German car, which is currently outclassing the competition.
Beyond the car, Salo also emphasizes the importance of Antonelli’s journey within Mercedes. The young Italian is not a novice in the team’s environment, which greatly facilitates his adaptation.

“He has been in the Mercedes system for a long time. He knows the organization perfectly and knows how to use its resources, he confides. Mercedes was able to train him to become the driver they wanted.”
A considerable advantage compared to other rookies often thrown into more unstable contexts.
Russell’s experience lying in wait
Despite this impressive start to the season, everything is not yet decided in the internal duel at Mercedes. George Russell could well reverse the trend over time.
“Over the course of the season, Russell’s experience could make the difference” estimates Salo, who sees the Briton gaining momentum as the races go by.
Accustomed to performing even with less competitive cars in recent years, Russell has a valuable consistency in a title fight.
A duel that is only just beginning
While Kimi Antonelli impresses with his precocity and speed, the 2026 F1 season is still long and full of uncertainties. Between Mercedes’ current dominance and the emerging internal rivalry, the championship could quickly evolve.
One thing is certain: Antonelli has already made an impression. But to confirm, he will have to continue to shine… even if the balance were to change.
