The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix was marked by a moment of great concern on lap 21, when Oliver Bearman was the victim of an impressive crash in the Spoon curve, one of the fastest and most demanding on the Suzuka circuit.

Caught off guard by the speed difference when closing in on Franco Colapinto’s Alpine, the Haas driver could not avoid losing control. His car then crossed the grass at high speed, taking out the braking markers before violently hitting the safety barriers sideways.

The impact, estimated at 50G, testifies to the violence of the shock, immediately followed by the intervention of the marshals and the deployment of the safety car.

A conscious but physically affected driver

Despite the brutality of the accident, Bearman managed to get out of his car on his own, a first reassuring sign. Nevertheless, the images clearly showed the Briton limping, raising fears of an injury to his right leg.

Quickly attended to by medical teams, he was transferred to the circuit’s medical center for thorough examinations, in accordance with the strict Formula 1 safety protocol.

The concern was all the greater as high-speed side impacts can lead to serious injuries, particularly to the lower limbs.

The reassuring medical verdict

A few hours after the incident, Haas F1 Team gave encouraging news about its driver. The examinations, including an X-ray, ruled out any fractures.

“50G impact – Oliver had an X-ray at the medical center. No fractures were detected. He is suffering from a contusion to his right knee following the impact” indicated a spokesperson for the team.

The statement also specifies that the driver was “conscious and able to communicate” confirming that his general condition did not cause major concern.

A positive outcome despite the violence of the shock

After being examined, Bearman was finally cleared to leave the medical center, ending a stressful sequence for his team and the paddock.

This incident serves as another reminder of the intrinsic danger of the discipline, even with the extremely high safety standards of modern Formula 1.

While the scare was real, the main thing is elsewhere: Oliver Bearman escaped without serious injury, an almost miraculous outcome given the violence of the impact.
