Kimi Antonelli has been making headlines since the start of the 2026 season. The young Mercedes driver, only 19 years old, has quickly established himself as a genuine contender for the world title, already holding a 43-point lead over his teammate George Russell.
Author of four consecutive wins, the Italian has even become the first driver in Formula 1 history to achieve his first four victories in four consecutive Grands Prix. A statistic that perfectly illustrates the magnitude of the phenomenon.
His performances, his aggressiveness on track, and his maturity impress many paddock observers. And this time, it is a well-known figure from Ferrari who has delivered a particularly strong analysis of the Mercedes driver’s talent.
Rob Smedley already sees a generational driver
Former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley did not hide his admiration for Antonelli during the High Performance Racing podcast. According to him, the young Italian already possesses extremely rare qualities for a driver with so little F1 experience.
“You can see how much he pushes the car to the limit, explains Smedley. When you watch him, everything looks very fast, but you especially notice his braking points, the way he controls the car, and the precision of his lines.”
The British engineer also emphasizes the consistency of the Mercedes driver, an element often decisive in evaluating future great champions.
“The car moves a lot, but he remains extremely precise. He constantly repeats the same lines with great consistency. For someone with so little experience, it’s very impressive.”
Qualities that inevitably recall some champions who have marked the recent history of the sport.

Similarities with Verstappen and Hamilton
For several months, Antonelli has regularly been compared to Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton for his aggressive approach and total lack of complex facing more experienced drivers.
His tough duel with George Russell at the Canadian Grand Prix further reinforced this impression. The Italian never hesitated to attack his teammate, even at the risk of several spectacular collisions.
This “all or nothing” mentality clearly recalls Verstappen’s early days in F1. But for Smedley, Antonelli’s potential could even go further.
“If we imagine Antonelli with six more years of experience in Formula 1, when he reaches his performance peak, then I sincerely think we are dealing with a generational talent, he states. I really think he is that good.”
Mercedes may finally have its new leader
Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari left a huge void at Mercedes. Many wondered about Antonelli’s ability to immediately handle the pressure of a top team and a championship fight.
A few months later, the observation is spectacular. Not only is the Italian present, but he already seems capable of leading the German team into a new cycle of domination.
His pure speed, his confidence in duels, and his composure in key moments impress even within the paddock. And while the season is still long, many observers are now beginning to see in him the future face of Formula 1.
