Formula 1 has just recorded a spectacular new record in the collectibles market.
A helmet that belonged to Gilles Villeneuve was sold for the impressive sum of 1.2 million dollars, thus becoming the most expensive F1 helmet ever purchased.
The sale was organized by the specialized company Hall of Fame Collection, which had held this extremely rare item for several years.
The helmet in question has immense historical value as it is one of only two helmets used by Villeneuve during the 1982 season, his last in Formula 1.
An item linked to the Canadian’s last exploits
This iconic helmet was notably worn by the Ferrari driver during the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, where Gilles Villeneuve achieved his last career podium.
Only two weeks later, the Canadian tragically lost his life during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at the Zolder circuit.
This emotional and historical significance largely explains the incredible amount paid by the buyer, whose identity has not been revealed.
The item, accompanied by its original GPA bag, has now returned to Canada after nearly thirty years spent in a private collection.

Ayrton Senna beaten
With this colossal amount, Gilles Villeneuve’s helmet now surpasses the previous record held by an Ayrton Senna helmet dating from 1992.
The latter was sold last year for just over 900,000 dollars.
The market for historic Formula 1 memorabilia has been experiencing spectacular growth for several years, especially around pieces associated with the sport’s greatest legends.
“History has just been made”
Hall of Fame Collection celebrated this historic sale in a particularly enthusiastic statement.
“History has just been made. The first helmet in history sold for more than one million US dollars is this original GPA helmet of Gilles Villeneuve used in racing in 1982” the company stated.
The company also recalls that the item had been kept in a private collection for nearly three decades before being offered for sale.
“The value of collectibles continues to increase, as the world’s greatest collectors now consider these pieces as true investments. This sale also helps celebrate Gilles’ legacy.”
More than forty years after his passing, Gilles Villeneuve continues to mark the history of Formula 1, both on and off the track.
