Since the introduction of the new 2026 regulations, many drivers have expressed their frustration regarding the complexity of the current cars. Max Verstappen is among the most vocal critics, to the point of recently suggesting he might leave F1 if certain changes are not made by 2027.

Lewis Hamilton also shares several concerns about the direction the sport is taking. The Ferrari driver believes that drivers should have more say in regulatory decisions.

“All the drivers work together, we meet regularly, but the reality is that we don’t have a seat at the table of discussions” Hamilton explained.

The seven-time world champion considers that this situation is no longer suitable for modern F1, especially since drivers are the first affected by the difficulties related to the new cars.

Has F1 become too complex?

Although several observers acknowledge that races are sometimes more competitive this season, many criticisms focus on the artificial aspect of current driving.

Energy management, battery recovery, lift and coast, and constraints related to hybrid systems: drivers constantly have to deal with complex parameters that sometimes detract from pure on-track spectacle.

Hamilton also believes that this excessive sophistication makes understanding races much more difficult for the public.

“We communicate with the FIA and with F1. F1 is sometimes a bit more reactive, but since we are not considered stakeholders, we currently have no official place in the discussions, and I think that needs to change” he stated.

Fans massively support Hamilton

Following the Ferrari driver’s statements, a poll was offered to supporters to find out if drivers should have a more important role in shaping future rules.

The result was extremely clear: nearly 95% of voters supported the position defended by Hamilton.

The vast majority of fans thus believe that drivers are best placed to identify current problems in the sport and propose relevant solutions.

Conversely, only just over 5% of participants consider that drivers should simply focus on driving without intervening in regulatory decisions.

Verstappen also very critical

Hamilton’s remarks ultimately align with those of Max Verstappen, who has been calling for several months for a “purer” F1 less dependent on complex systems.

The four-time world champion advocates especially for a return to cars that are simpler to drive and more understandable for spectators.

With massive fan support for Hamilton, pressure could now increase on the FIA and F1 ahead of future regulatory discussions for 2027 and beyond.
