George Russell’s Canadian weekend had all the makings of a perfect scenario. Pole sitter, sprint winner, and again pole sitter for the Grand Prix, the Briton seemed in full control at the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit.

But after only 30 laps of racing, everything suddenly stopped for the Mercedes driver. While fiercely battling his teammate Kimi Antonelli for the win, Russell suffered a major engine failure that forced him to retire.

A heavy blow in the championship fight as the Italian then went on to claim a fourth consecutive victory, now extending his lead to 43 points in the standings.

A sudden failure in the heat of battle

The race had offered an exceptional spectacle between the two Mercedes cars. Russell and Antonelli exchanged the lead several times during the first 30 laps, delivering one of the best duels of the early season.

But at turn 8, everything changed for the Briton. His W17 suddenly broke down before coming to a permanent stop at the side of the track.

“Everything just went off suddenly as I entered the corner. The engine stopped, there was no electronics, barely any braking left” Russell explained after the race.

The Mercedes driver did not hide his immense frustration after this particularly cruel retirement.

“I’m a bit speechless right now” he admitted.

An almost perfect weekend reduced to nothing

Despite this extremely frustrating outcome, Russell wanted to focus on the positive aspects of his Montreal weekend. The Briton believes he delivered one of his best overall performances since the start of the season.

“I’m proud of my weekend. I took pole for the sprint, won the sprint, then took pole for the Grand Prix” the Mercedes driver recalled.

Before his failure, Russell also seemed to have found an excellent pace against Antonelli in particularly tricky conditions.

“I was leading when the car stopped. I had a great battle with Kimi” he added.

Russell refuses to blame himself

While this retirement is very costly for the championship, George Russell refuses to question his own performance. The Briton feels he extracted the maximum possible from his package throughout the weekend.

“From my side, I don’t feel there was more to do this weekend, so I leave satisfied nonetheless” he confided.

However, the frustration remains immense after such a mechanical disappointment.

“Of course, I’m extremely frustrated by what happened, but what more could I have done?” Russell concluded.

Now 43 points behind Antonelli in the championship, the Mercedes driver sees the pressure seriously mounting ahead of the next round in Monaco.
