The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix had actually started very well for George Russell. Pole position holder after winning the sprint race the day before, the Mercedes driver seemed capable of making a comeback in the championship thanks to an intense battle against his teammate Kimi Antonelli.

For nearly 30 laps, the two Mercedes drivers engaged in a spectacular duel in Montreal, exchanging the race lead several times. But everything changed when Russell’s W17 suffered a sudden power unit failure.

While still leading the race, the Briton immediately slowed down before stopping his car at the side of the track. A few minutes later, Antonelli was heading for a fourth consecutive victory and extended his lead in the championship.

Visibly devastated after this mechanical failure, Russell let out his frustration in his cockpit.

Russell’s gesture did not please the FIA

When getting out of his car, George Russell tore off and threw his headrest onto the track. A gesture closely observed by the race stewards, who considered it could pose a potential danger.

The FIA therefore summoned the Mercedes driver after the race to examine the incident.

In the end, Russell was fined 5,000 euros, suspended for twelve months. This means the sanction will only be applied in case of a similar repeat offense within the coming year.

In its official report, the FIA explained that the object thrown onto the track could create a dangerous situation for other competitors or the marshals present at the side of the track.

Russell admits his mistake after the race

Facing the stewards, George Russell quickly admitted having crossed the line in the heat of the moment.

“I was extremely frustrated after the retirement and I am embarrassed by what happened afterwards” Russell said before the officials.

The Mercedes driver also apologized and acknowledged that his behavior was not a good example.

“I apologize to the stewards for my gesture. I recognize that it did not give a good image and I am ready to apologize publicly” he added.

The FIA specified in its statement that it took into account the Briton’s apologies before deciding on a suspended sanction rather than a heavier immediate penalty.

A mixed weekend for Mercedes

This misadventure concludes an extremely mixed weekend for Mercedes. The German team seemed to have regained a very solid level of performance in Montreal with Russell’s poles and Antonelli’s final victory.

But the Briton’s retirement represents a huge blow in the fight for the championship. Thanks to his success in Canada, Antonelli now has a 43-point lead over his teammate.

For his part, Russell leaves Montreal with a bitter feeling, despite a very high level of performance throughout the Canadian weekend.
