The Canadian Grand Prix seemed to be going well for George Russell. After a solid weekend marked by his pole position and victory in the sprint, the Mercedes driver was engaged in a spectacular battle with his teammate Kimi Antonelli during the main race.
The two men exchanged positions several times in the early stints, replicating the duel already seen the day before during the sprint on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. Antonelli, championship leader, constantly put pressure on Russell, with both Mercedes running at a very close pace.
At the time of the incident, Russell was still leading the internal duel with only a few tenths of a second ahead of the young Italian. But everything changed on lap 30.
A sudden failure ends his race
As he approached turn 8, Russell suddenly lost control of his car before crossing the grass. Very quickly, the Brit realized the problem was major and stopped his Mercedes at the side of the track.
The driver’s frustration was immediately visible. After exiting his W17, Russell violently threw the headrest of his car before hitting the bodywork with his hands, unable to hide his anger after this particularly painful retirement.
Mercedes later confirmed it was a power unit failure, abruptly ending their driver’s race.

A major blow in the championship fight
This retirement represents a huge setback for George Russell, who hoped to capitalize on his excellent Canadian weekend to regain important points in the championship. Instead, the Brit leaves Montreal with zero points.
This mechanical failure especially allows Kimi Antonelli to make an excellent points gain. The young Mercedes driver directly benefits from his teammate’s retirement to further strengthen his position at the top of the world championship.
It is also Russell’s first retirement since the 2024 British Grand Prix, proof of the reliability shown by Mercedes in recent years. But this time, the mechanics failed at the worst possible moment for the Brit.
Mercedes under pressure after this setback
This engine problem is now likely to raise several questions on the Brackley side. Mercedes seemed to have regained very good momentum in Canada, with a car performing well both in qualifying and race pace.
But this failure could have serious consequences for the rest of the season, especially in such a tight championship. With Antonelli in full confidence and McLaren still very close, Russell probably could not afford a zero-point weekend.
The British driver will now have to quickly turn the page to restart his season at the next round.
