Faced with geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East, the FIA is considering an unprecedented scenario: bringing forward the return of the Turkish Grand Prix as early as this season.

The 2026 Formula 1 season could take an unexpected turn. Due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, several races remain uncertain today, notably those scheduled in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Initially, the sport had considered rescheduling these events later in the year, particularly in a window between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix in early October. Another option under study would be to condense the end of the season with a series of four consecutive races, even if it means pushing the finale to mid-December.
But these scenarios remain conditional on the evolution of the security situation in the region.
Turkey as a credible backup solution
In this uncertain context, the FIA is exploring a serious alternative: bringing forward the return of the Turkish Grand Prix, originally planned for next season.
The Istanbul Park circuit, absent from the F1 calendar for several years, could thus be used earlier than expected, provided certain technical and logistical requirements are met.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, confirmed that this track is being actively studied, while specifying that several parameters still need to be validated, including the circuit homologation and local organizational capacities.
Logistical and human constraints to respect
If this option is appealing on paper, it can only be implemented under certain conditions. The FIA particularly insists on the need to preserve the teams and personnel, already heavily burdened by a busy schedule.

The organization wants to avoid adding excessive pressure on paddock actors, especially in case of an intense sequence of races at the end of the season.
The final choice will therefore depend on a delicate balance between logistical feasibility, sporting constraints, and respect for human resources.
Safety above all
Beyond sporting considerations, the priority remains clearly safety. The FIA president recalled that the current situation goes far beyond the scope of motorsport.
According to him, if tensions were to persist until autumn, some events could simply be canceled. The Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix are also not fully guaranteed at this stage.
“Sport can wait. The priority is human beings” he insisted, emphasizing that the safety of teams, drivers, and the public will always remain the number one criterion.
An end of season still very unclear
Several months before the deadline, Formula 1 is therefore proceeding with caution. Between postponements, adaptations, and alternative solutions like Turkey, the 2026 calendar could still evolve significantly.
One thing is certain: the sport will have to show flexibility to adapt to an unpredictable international context, even if it means disrupting its initial plans.
