F1 Calendar 2026: towards a surprise return of Bahrain in October?

Formula 1 does not rule out a return of the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026. But everything will depend on a still very uncertain geopolitical situation.

The return of the Bahrain Grand Prix to the 2026 F1 calendar remains a credible hypothesis, without being an immediate priority. Originally scheduled for spring, the Sakhir event was removed from the calendar in March, as was the Jeddah race, due to the tense situation in the Middle East.

However, the choice of words used at the time — referring to races that “will not take place in April” — was not accidental. It deliberately left the door slightly open to rescheduling later in the 2026 F1 season, if conditions allowed. A nuance that still fuels behind-the-scenes discussions today.

For now, no concrete decision has been made, and the governing bodies remain cautious in the face of a still unstable geopolitical situation. The priority remains above all safety and logistical feasibility.

The October option gains momentum

Among the various scenarios studied, one option seems to stand out more clearly: that of a rescheduling in early October. The weekend of October 3 and 4, situated between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, appears to be the most coherent window.

This slot would allow for a relatively logical sequence of three races from a logistical standpoint, with Bahrain integrated in the middle. A solution considered much more realistic than other options considered, notably that of shifting the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to free up space at the end of the season.

This last idea, which would have led to a series of four consecutive races, did not convince the teams. The prospect of such a dense calendar at the end of the year raises significant concerns, both organizationally and physically for the staff.

Teams hesitate in the face of an overloaded calendar

Actors in the paddock are generally reluctant to any excessive extension of the calendar. Ending the season with an unprecedented sequence of four consecutive races would be seen as a real logistical headache, not to mention the fatigue accumulated by the teams.

Added to this is a major constraint: the official FIA prize-giving ceremony, already scheduled in Shanghai in mid-December. Profoundly modifying the end of the season would further complicate the overall organization of the championship.

In this context, postponing Bahrain to October appears as an acceptable compromise, provided the regional situation evolves favorably in the coming months.

A decision suspended on the geopolitical situation

Despite the different options on the table, nothing can move forward without a notable improvement in the Middle East. F1 officials remain attentive to the evolution of the situation before making a final decision.

Moreover, the absolute priority remains maintaining the races already planned in the region, notably in Qatar and Abu Dhabi at the end of the season. Any calendar modification must fit in without compromising these key events.

Formula 1 is therefore preparing for all eventualities, with alternative plans ready to be activated if necessary. But for Bahrain, the hope of a return in 2026 will depend above all on a factor completely outside the sport: geopolitical stability.
