Max Verstappen could shake up the F1 driver market

Max Verstappen’s future is already at the center of all speculation, as the four-time world champion considers his next steps in F1.

Since the start of the 2026 season, Max Verstappen has clearly expressed his disagreement with the new technical regulations. Half of the power of the cars now comes from the battery, which complicates management in corners and prevents drivers from fully pushing their cars.

“I wonder about the point of staying far from home if I don’t enjoy doing what I do” confided the Dutchman before leaving the Suzuka circuit last Sunday.

This dissatisfaction could lead to a departure for Verstappen if no major changes are made for 2027, a scenario that already has Red Bull on alert. The mere fact that its star driver is considering leaving the Austrian team and F1 could trigger a chain reaction in the transfer market.

The consequences for Red Bull and the market

If Verstappen decides to leave, Red Bull will have to find a suitable replacement, which involves delicate negotiations with other teams to attract an experienced and high-performing driver.

“The absolute priority is to decide my future, but I also have to think about where I want to race” explains Verstappen, who is working intensely with Red Bull to improve the competitiveness of the current RB22.

Some rumors suggest a possible exit clause as early as the summer, similar to the one confirmed by Helmut Marko last year, which could accelerate the Dutchman’s departure. In the current state of the car and the championship, staying in the top 3 seems complicated, leaving the door open for a potential adventure elsewhere.

Mercedes, Ferrari and the appeal of a new adventure

Rival teams are obviously following the situation closely. Toto Wolff has already shown his interest in Verstappen, and the contractual situation of George Russell could provide an opportunity for Mercedes. At Ferrari, Fred Vasseur has a young alternative with Oliver Bearman, but does not hesitate to target the best drivers available.

Furthermore, Verstappen’s skills in endurance racing are attracting the attention of teams that have development paths outside of traditional F1.

“Red Bull remains my second family, but I must first decide if I want to continue in F1” specifies the four-time world champion.

As the 2026 F1 season continues, Verstappen’s future could well become the key factor that will decide many moves in the driver market for 2027, with major consequences for Red Bull and its competitors.
